Nov 3, I’ve had very similar thoughts about the whole Matchmaking thing in the Destiny series, and I thought I’d chime in with some ideas that I’ve observed over time as Destiny has evolved. I come from a very heavy MMO background as well so the idea of the game not having chat or an LFG system built into the game was baffling to me and a huge deterrent for me enjoying the game during Year 1. Over time, as I played the game more and actually got more invested in it, I started to try to understand the why behind certain decisions when it comes to matchmaking. Some of the decisions they make downright make the game more frustrating for a player, especially on PC. However, as you mentioned in the OP, it does line up with their philosophy of what Destiny should be like. This presents unique challenges as there are some positives that come from the situation they have made as well as the negatives I’m sure many of us have all encountered. The main thing that sticks out to me is that having the player leave their comfort zone somewhat to gain passage into doing a harder activity can lead to bolstering the community as a whole. An example of this could be the original DestinyGAF community. When people realized they couldn’t do the Weekly Heroic Strikes with matchmaking, the first thing they did was jump online and meet some people that they could try it with. There was a lot of failures, but when the successes happened, those players tended to stick together.

In Destiny, grouping up with other players is necessary if you want to complete the games most difficult and rewarding content, Raids and Nightfall Strikes. For the last step, you will need to complete a Nightfall Strike with at least 5 minutes remaining.

As such, my Destiny experience has mostly been single player for a while now. My experiences with LFG over the course of the weekend were varied. The Nightfalls were an interesting case, as absolutely no one thought it necessary to use mics. But a lack of communication was painful in some instances. The Nightfall was the only activity where I actually had groups quit on me, or I quit on my group.

If I want something in between, I can do strike matchmaking in the heroic playlist, or you know, I can do the Nightfall that week. There will be a new feature called Guided Games that is meant to bring players together for challenging activities, but randomly pairing players is something that Bungie feels does not work for its game.
